Rootonym appeals to wordsmiths of all ages and encourages players to think beyond ordinary vocabulary. Most players are surprised to see that many words have a common root, such as inspection and spectator and prediction and dictionary.
Root words, a short definition, part of speech and the number of letters in the word are given, then players work to fill in the complete word. In some instances, the keyword challenge at the bottom of the puzzle takes the opposite approach. Players are given a word and asked to guess its root, root meaning and definition.
